Some of the most commonly used paper formats are A4 and A5. The largest sheet of paper in the A format system is A0, a sheet of paper of one square meter. The next largest size, A1, is made by dividing the longest side of A0 into two halves. A2 is made by dividing the longest side of A1 into two halves and so on (see illustration and table below).
B formats are bigger than A formats and are primarily used by printers. C formats are used to indicate formats of e.g. envelopes and folders which fit A formats.
